VasoNova Inc.

Located in Sunnyvale, Calif., VasoNova™ is a medical device company that uses an algorithm-based combination of intravascular Doppler ultrasound and electrocardiography to guide and place vascular access devices, such as a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), with precision and reliability. The company's Vascular Positioning System™ (VPS) uses multiple internal physiological parameters to accurately place the catheter tip in the desired location in the vasculature.

Demand for PICCs is increasing significantly as hospitals, physicians and pharmaceutical companies recognize the benefits of an in-dwelling central line to deliver drugs and nutrients, and even to draw blood. Because a PICC can remain in dwelling and useful for several months it offers a method for patients to receive infusions away from hospitals and outpatient clinics. More than 2 million PICCs are placed each year, but usage remains below market potential because of difficulties with PICC insertion and placement. VasoNova's VPS will improve the efficiency of PICC placement and expand the current number of users.

Founded in 2005, VasoNova until now has operated primarily in stealth mode while developing its VPS. The company announced in May 2009 that it will launch VPS in the summer of 2009, having secured several Food and Drug Administration device clearances. The 510(k)-approved VPS product kit will include a PICC (catheter), stylette and electronic console.

RCT has invested in VasoNova with Aphelion Capital, Arboretum Ventures, California Technology Ventures, CMEA Ventures, Coronis Medical Ventures and Life Science Angels.
